The gift of being honest with Dad
Perhaps one of the most meaningful gifts we can give is a moment of openness.
Father’s Day is here.
It’s easy to rely on the familiar: a card, a gift, a quick “thanks for everything.” But I’ve been wondering—what would it look like to share something truly honest with my dad today?
Not a harsh truth. Not a dramatic confession. Just a gentle, raw moment of sincerity—first with myself, and maybe even with him.
Lately, I’ve noticed the ways I keep certain things tucked away. Habits I fall into. Words I’ve left unspoken. It’s not always easy to sit with, but there’s an undeniable relief in acknowledging it.
So, how does this connect to Father’s Day?
Maybe it’s as simple as asking a question like:
“Have you ever caught yourself hiding something, even from yourself?”
Or sharing something vulnerable:
“I’ve been working on being more honest with myself. One thing I’ve noticed is that I often [share a small habit or pattern]—and I think, in some ways, it’s tied to wanting to protect or please you.”
We often feel like Father’s Day has to be about gratitude or celebration. But perhaps one of the most meaningful gifts we can give is a moment of openness. A question. A story. A small truth.
That, too, is a way to show love.
